(#4) 8-24-16

You guys are doing great so far on your Zoom Project. I can't wait to see it inked, but I'm jumping ahead. We will be inking starting Wednesday so BRING YOUR PENS and your finished pencil drawing. I noticed that some of you are struggling with composition and are still centering your images without taking into effect the Principles of Design. I am uploading two videos for you to watch. The first one is roughly 16-17 minutes long but does a great job at explaining the Golden Ratio/Rule of Thirds method for creating a balanced and appealing composition for any work of art. The second one is about 3 minutes and is great for a quick reference for when you are stuck on a piece and need quick tips on the go. I expect you to watch both.

Please answer the following questions:
  1. What common mistake(s) do you find yourself making in your own artwork?
  2. What is it about the Rule of Thirds that makes it pleasing to the eye?
  3. How will this help you when you are creating your own artwork?
  4. After watching the short 3 minute video, which "quick tip" did you find the most useful?

  1. What common mistake(s) do you find yourself making in your own artwork?
Common mistakes that many people make and I used to make a lot before was that I would center the point of interest. But the eye is not attracted to it because it is not going by the Rule of Thirds.
What is it about the Rule of Thirds that makes it pleasing to the eye?
It is pleasing to the eye because it is where the eyes are arrested to. Which means that if the point of interest is in one of those 4 points, then the viewer sees what the artist intended to be payed attention to.
How will this help you when you are creating your own artwork?
This will help me in creating my own artwork because it will help guide me in knowing where to place things so the viewer is attracted to that part.
After watching the short 3 minute video, which "quick tip" did you find the most useful?
After watching the video, a quick tip I found most useful was using lines to lead the viewers to what you want them to see. Because they look natural but get to the point.

  2. 1. What common mistake do you find yourself making in your own artwork?
A mistake I have made in my artwork is the way I place things on a paper or canvas which is in a place that does not catch the eye because of the proportions and where its centered.

    2. What is it about the Rule of Thirds that makes it pleasing to the eye?
The Rule of Thirds is pleasing to the eye is because of where it is place . So if it was in one of those 4 points then that is what will catch the eye.

    3. How will this help you when you are creating your own artwork?
This will help me when I am creating my artwork because it will help me to catch my viewers eyes because I will be able to learn how to ratio my artwork.

    4. After watching the short video, which "quick tip" did you find most useful?
While watching the short video, a tip I learned was to lead my viewers into the picture. So I should create natural lines so that my viewer will follow the direct point that I want them to notice most when looking at my artwork.

  5. 1. A common mistake i found myself doing in my artwork is probably the balancing i do with my images while drawing.
    2. The third rule makes it pleasing to the eye because those four points are normally where your eyes always look when looking a picture or painting.
    3. This will help me when i create my own artwork because i will now know to use the rule of thirds to make sure to catch the eyes attention.
    4. I think that the most helpful tip i got from the video was leading lines because i never thought about adding that to my artwork and it seems like it will improve my artwork.

  6. 1: One commen mistake that i keep repeating is that im not adding enough detail
2: It pleases the eye because it has a linear feature in the image that allows it to flow from section to section
3: It will help me understand it and make me drawing look more realistic
4: what i found most useful is that if it looks good it is good
